In addition to writing, Jo has a great deal of sub-editing experience, for both arts and travel publications. Jo is joint deputy Off-West End editor at Whatsonstage.com. This role includes writing and editing copy for the Off-West End sub-site and uploading it to the web. Whatsonstage.com/offwestend is the main listings, reviews, news and features resource for London's Off-West End theatre scene. Jo has undertaken work placements at the Sunday Times Culture, the Independent Sunday Review and Condé Nast Traveller, where she gained experience of each publication's editorial systems and sub-editing guidelines. Working on the Daily Telegraph's online travel pages has given Jo her most recent experience of copy-editing for the web, preparing pages for publication and managing live comment feeds. While taking some time out to complete an MA in English last year, Jo took the opportunity of editing the travel pages of London Student, the University of London Union's newspaper. This fortnightly paper is the largest of its kind in Europe and was shortlisted for Students' Union Publication of the Year at the NUS Awards 2008. The role of Travel Editor gave Jo full responsibility for the travel pages, including commissioning and sub-editing. Working with a large number of inexperienced student journalists was instrumental in terms of developing her sub-editing skill-set. Two regular features that Jo launched – travel book reviews and a column by London students studying abroad – proved very popular. One of Jo’s journalists, Stuart Powell, won the Guardian Student Media Award for Student Travel Writer of the Year 2008. Jo is familiar with the following editing software: QuarkXpress PDFs of Jo’s London Student work can be downloaded here: Issue 1, The real Indo-Pakistan conflict Issue 3, Imperial students rock Issue 5, Paseo in a winter wonderland Issue 7, Just remember to keep your weight forward Issue 8, Teaching with a TEFL in the ‘city of joy’ Issue 10, Like China, only faster and shinier |
